Frankly, you’re only going to take the ferry to Hamilton Island if you’re doing a longer trip through Queensland. But it does give you the opportunity to explore the underrated Whitsundays region beyond the islands. Pick up a hire car in Proserpine, and you can enjoy a kayaking tour in the Whitsundays sunshine or spot crocodiles on a Proserpine River cruise. Further afield, you can see kangaroos on the beach in Cape Hillsborough, and maybe a platypus in the Eungella National Park.

The best time to visit Hamilton Island is between mid-August and mid-October.
