History of Spectacle Island

In 1865, the colonial government decided that Spectacle Island was the perfect place for storing the colony’s gunpowder. Buildings started popping up on the island, and the isthmus was built up, changing the shape of the island.

From 1884, Spectacle Island became the naval armaments depot, with the Government gunpowder stores being moved elsewhere.

Spectacle Island is still in naval hands today. It is mainly used for storage, but a training ship is also based here.
