Drummoyne, Sydney: Things to do and attractions

Drummoyne, Sydney: Things to do and attractions

The best things to do in Drummoyne, Sydney, are the Birkenhead Point outlet mall and the Bay Run around Iron Cove. Other Drummoyne attractions include the riverside playgrounds at Russell Park, Taplin Park and Peppercorn Reserve, plus a handful of good Drummoyne restaurants.

Drummoyne is not the sort of Sydney suburb that regularly appears on the tourist map. It’s just a little too far west of Sydney CBD to cross the radar, even though you can drive there in 20 minutes and several buses depart for Drummoyne from outside Town Hall.

Where is Drummoyne located?

Were Drummoyne a little closer to central Sydney, it might get a little more attention due to its waterside location. It might not be quite as pretty as Elizabeth Bay or Parsley Bay on Sydney Harbour, but Drummoyne juts into the Parramatta River. This is just before it joins the Lane Cove River and becomes Sydney Harbour. But the precise geography doesn’t matter all that much. Drummoyne overlooks several Sydney Harbour Islands, including Snapper Island, Spectacle Island and Cockatoo Island.

The main attraction in Drummoyne is Birkenhead Point. Here, the Birkenhead Point marina abuts Sydney’s largest outlet mall shopping centre. More than 125 international and Australian brands such as Country Road have outlet shops at Birkenhead Point.

Things to do in Drummoyne: The Bay Run around Iron Cove

But if you’ve no desire to go bargain hunting in an outlet mall, the best thing to do in Drummoyne is the Bay Run.

The 7km-long Bay Run is one of Sydney’s best dedicated running and cycling routes, with the path divided for pedestrians and cyclists. The circuit passes around the edge of Iron Cove, taking in several relatively under-the-radar Sydney suburbs. These include Rozelle, Lilyfield, Haberfield, Five Dock and Drummoyne. There are some fab views over the water on the way.

Otherwise, there are several riverside parks and reserves to chill out at. Russell Park, Taplin Park and Peppercorn Reserve all have reasonably good children’s playgrounds.

Drummoyne restaurants

There are also a few good restaurants in Drummoyne. Kadmus offers Lebanese meze dining, while the more upscale Ecco Ristorante pairs high quality Italian food with a waterside location. Drummoyne is by no means Sydney’s dining hotbed. Try Spice Alley in Chippendale if you want cheap but fun, Chin Chin in Surry Hills for buzzy pan-Asian dining with an Australian twist or Catalina in Rose Bay for romantic harbourside seafood.
