Dunns Swamp, Wollemi National Park, NSW: Camping & kayaking

Dunns Swamp in Wollemi National Park offers camping among the pagoda-shaped rocks and kayaking tours along the Cudgegong River.

The Dunns Swamp area is one of the most accessible sections of the huge Wollemi National Park. This New South Wales national park is largely wilderness, but Dunns Swamp at the western end near Mudgee is at least partially set up for visitors.

Known as Ganguddy to the local Aboriginal people, Dunns Swamp is a waterway branching off the Cudgegong River. It is surrounded by scribbly gum woodlands and pagoda-style rock formations.

Cudgegong River kayak tours

The other great reason to visit Dunns Swamp is kayaking. Southern Cross Kayaking runs kayaking tours along the Cudgegong River, with a particular focus on the wildlife.

Tour guides also explain the landscape, delving into how the sandstone escarpments, dramatic gorges and strange pagoda-style rocks came to be.

The half day tours also dip into the region’s history, focusing on both the local Aboriginal culture, and European settlement in the area.

Kayak hire at Dunns Swamp

If you’d prefer to explore under your own steam, Southern Cross Kayaking also rents out kayaks and stand-up paddleboards. They’re not available every day, however – usually just evenings and weekends during the tourist season. So check with Southern Cross Kayaking before arriving.
