Armidale to Tamworth road trip: Uralla attractions

The first town on the Armidale to Tamworth road trip route is Uralla, a former goldrush site. You can try your own luck panning for gold at the Wooldridge Recreation and Fossicking Area. Don’t expect too much of the shiny stuff to be left behind, though.

Uralla is somewhat obsessed with notorious bushranger Captain Thunderbolt, who is buried in the Old Uralla Cemetery on John Street. You’ll find out more about the story in the McCrossin’s Mill Museum – a converted flour mill.

Captain Thunderbolt’s Rock, a cluster of big granite outcrops to the south of town on the highway, was where the bushranger was shot by police in 1863. It is now a good picnic site and photo stop.
