Which towns are on the Augusta Highway, South Australia?

There aren’t many big towns on the Augusta Highway, South Australia. The road stretches 209km from Port Wakefield, via Lochiel, Crystal Brook, Port Germein and Mambray Creek.

The Augusta Highway in South Australia is a fairly recent invention. Until 2011, this stretch of road was simply known as National Highway 1.

It is still part of National Highway 1, which does the big lap around Australia. But one section has now been given a second badge and an identity.

How long is the Augusta Highway?

The Augusta Highway starts in Port Wakefield at the top of South Australia’s Yorke Peninsula. From there it heads north for a total of 209km until it meets the Eyre Highway in Port Augusta. You’ll drive along it if travelling the quickest way from Adelaide to Alice Springs, Adelaide to Perth or Adelaide to Port Lincoln.

From Port Wakefield to Port Augusta, there’s not a great deal to get excited about, although a few Augusta Highway towns are arguably worth a stop.

Augusta Highway towns: Lochiel, Crystal Brook and Warnertown

First up out of Port Wakefield comes Lochiel, from where you can see Lake Bumbunga – one of South Australia’s pink lakes. Lochiel accommodation picks include the Pink Lake Tiny House Sakura and the Dandelion Retreat.

The Augusta Highway then skims past Port Pirie, meeting the Goyder Highway at Crystal Brook and Wilkins Highway at Warnertown. Slightly further along is Napperby, and the junction with the Spencer Highway.

The Port Pirie to Port Augusta section of the drive then continues past Port Germein and Mambray Creek – gateway to the Mount Remarkable National Park.

Perhaps the most important turn-off, however, comes at Stirling North, about 8km from the northern end of the Augusta Highway. This is where the Flinders Ranges Way branches off towards Quorn, Hawker and the Ikara-Flinders Ranges National Park.
