How long is the Eyre Highway in Australia? And what are the main towns?

The Eyre Highway from Norseman in Western Australia to Port Augusta in South Australia is 1,664km long. There are very few towns along the way, with Eucla, Ceduna, Wudinna and Kimba being the largest.

The Eyre Highway is one of the most notorious roads in Australia. That’s not because it’s especially dangerous, but because it is incredibly long and passes through extremely remote territory.

Eyre Highway length

The Eyre Highway is 1,664km long, and runs from Norseman in Western Australia to Port Augusta in South Australia. It is part of National Highway 1 which does a lap around Australia.

Don’t want to drive the Nullarbor? Then consider a ten day camping adventure tour from Perth to Adelaide (or in the opposite direction).

It is also the road you’ll drive along if crossing the Nullarbor, the famously barren stretch of outback above the Great Australian Bight. You’ll drive it if travelling from Perth to Sydney or Adelaide to Perth.

For most of the journey, you’re not passing through towns, but roadhouses such as Balladonia, Caiguna and Nullarbor Roadhouse.

Between Balladonia and Caiguna, you’ll get the dubious pleasure of driving along the longest straight road in Australia. The 90 Mile Straight is 146.6km long, and the signs at the start and end of it make for a good photo stop.

Towns on the Eyre Highway

Eucla on the Western Australian side of the border is a smidgeon bigger than a roadhouse, as is Penong near the top of the Eyre Peninsula.

It takes 1,204km along the Eyre Highway drive to reach the first substantial junction. At Ceduna in South Australia, you can branch south-east down the Eyre Peninsula towards Streaky Bay and Port Lincoln along the Flinders Highway.

The Eyre Highway continues through Poochera and Wudinna – gateway to Pildappa Rock and the Gawler Ranges. It then passes through Kimba and Iron Knob before meeting the Lincoln Highway at Lincoln Gap.

Shortly afterwards, the Eyre Highway finally arrives in Port Augusta at the top of the Spencer Gulf. Here, three major highways meet in one spot. You can choose to go south along the Augusta Highway to Adelaide, or north along the Stuart Highway towards Alice Springs and Darwin.

Ceduna accommodation tips

Ceduna is a logical place for an overnight stay whether you’ve just crossed the Nullarbor or are about to. You can search for places to stay in Ceduna here.
