Driving the 90 Mile Straight

Anyone getting the dubious pleasure of driving the 90 Mile Straight will be crossing the Nullarbor. This notoriously empty region of South Australia and Western Australia is something of a rite of passage for Australian drivers. From Ceduna in South Australia to Norseman in Western Australia, it’s more than 1,200km of largely barren landscape.

You’ll tackle the Nullarbor if you drive from Perth to Sydney, or Adelaide to Perth. It’s not quite as dull as often billed. Highlights include the very pink Lake MacDonnell, whale-watching at Head of Bight and walking amongst the dunes to the old telegraph station at Eucla.

The longest straight road in the world

Although many Australians believe the 90 Mile Straight to be the longest straight road in the world, that’s not the case. The longest straight road in the world is Highway 10 in Saudi Arabia. According to Guinness World Records, this relentless drive through the desert is 240km long.
