Where is Ceduna, South Australia?

There are things to do in Ceduna, but it is best thought of as a staging post. This South Australian town lies at the north-western corner of the Eyre Peninsula. It’s very close to the halfway point between Sydney and Perth.

For most people who visit Ceduna, however, it’s the last place they’ll get mobile phone reception before embarking on the drive across the Nullarbor Plain towards Perth. The Jim’s IGA or Foodland supermarkets are the last place to get food that’s merely expensive rather than very expensive.

After a 771km drive from Adelaide to Ceduna via Port Augusta and Kimba, taking approximately eight-and-a-quarter hours, Ceduna might also be an overnight stop. Accommodation options include the Big4 Ceduna Tourist Park and Ceduna Foreshore Hotel Motel. There are also 90 minute direct flights from Adelaide to Ceduna.

Attractions in Ceduna

There aren’t many things to do in Ceduna beyond getting supplies and making those last phone calls. But Ceduna attractions aren’t totally absent. The Indigenous-owned Arts Ceduna is a decent place to pick up Aboriginal art, for example.

You’d have to be pretty bored to get enthusiastic about the Ceduna School House National Trust Museum on Park Terrace, which is largely a depositary for old stuff and farm equipment. The section about the British Atomic Program is moderately interesting, however.

Alternatively, go for a walk. The 3.6km Ceduna Coastal Walking Trail stretches along the Murat Bay foreshore from the Ceduna Sailing Club to the Pinky Point Lookout. Pinky Point is a good sunset spot, with great views out over Denial Bay and the islands.

Other options for things to do in Ceduna include taking a drive to a few appealing beauty spots nearby. Decres Bay in the Wittelbee Conservation Park has a long, sandy swimming beach with views out to St Peter’s Island. It’s good for birdwatching, rock fishing and occasionally spotting dolphins.

Decres Bay is 10km south of Ceduna. Keep going another 13km and you’ll arrive at the Laura Bay Conservation Park. There are several sandy cove beaches here, as well as mangroves and rocky headlands woven into a walking trail.

Things to do in Ceduna, SA: Fishing and oyster farm tours

It’s also possible to do a couple of tours from Ceduna. Ceduna Boat Charter specialises in fishing charters, but also runs whale-watching tours during whale season, and trips into the Gawler Ranges on request.

SA Premium Oyster Farm Tours, on the other hand, takes visitors to the renowned oyster farms of Smoky Bay. These $99 tours involve a barge trip out to where the oysters are farmed, plus oyster tastings with wine.

Day trips from Ceduna

There are also several spots that can be done as a day trip from Ceduna, but are realistically going to be part of the road trip across the Nullarbor. These include the windmill collection at Penong, Lake MacDonnell, the famed surfing break at Cactus Beach, the rolling dunes of Fowlers Bay and the land-based whale-watching lookout at Head of Bight. Ceduna also hosts the final two holes of the Nullarbor Links golf course.

Go south-east down the Eyre Peninsula instead, and Ceduna can just about be used as a base for the tremendous swimming with sea lions tours at Baird Bay. This can be added to the Port Augusta to Ceduna section of an Adelaide to Perth road trip.
