What are the best things to do in Keith, South Australia?

The best things to do in Keith, South Australia, include climbing Mount Monster and walking in the Ngarkat Conservation Park.

Keith, South Australia, is as mundane as its name suggests. It’s a junction town – the Dukes Highway meets the Riddoch Highway here. And you’ll almost certainly pass through on the drive from Melbourne to Adelaide.

Some drivers may decide to stop for a coffee or fuel in Keith, South Australia. But is there more to the town?

Keith is an agricultural service hub at the top of the Limestone Coast. It isn’t really making much of a bid for tourist dollars, but there are a couple of attractions nearby.

Things to do in Keith, South Australia: Don Moseley Park

In the town itself, the best you’re going to get is Don Moseley Park, which has a cheesy little monorail. That’ll keep younger kids happy for a bit.

Also in town is the Landrover on a Pole. Which, as the name suggests, is a Landrover on a pole. It’s best not to ask too many questions.

Things to do in Keith, South Australia: Mount Monster Conservation Park

The best things to do in Keith are outside of the town, however. About 12km to the south, Mount Monster Conservation Park provides walks and wildlife around an imposing granite outcrop.

Kangaroos, wallabies and emus are regularly spotted here, as well as plenty of reptiles and birds.

It’s a 600 metre return walk to the top of Mount Monster.

Ngarkat Conservation Park walks

The Ngarkat Conservation Park to the north-east is much bigger and stretches to the border with Victoria. It’s mainly dunes and mallee, but there are a few good walking trails and plenty of wildlife.

In the section of the park nearest Keith, the best walks are the 1km return Gosse Hill hike and the 5km return Tyms Lookout hike. The latter offers good birdwatching and an impressive carpet of spring wildflowers.

Otherwise, the Ngarkat Conservation Park is best treated as a destination for 4WDing and bush camping.
