Port Hughes, South Australia: Port Hughes Beach & other things to do

If you like tranquil white sand beaches, then Port Hughes on the Yorke Peninsula’s Copper Coast has just what you’re after.

Port Hughes in South Australia offer perhaps the most attractive beach on the Copper Coast of the Yorke Peninsula. It’s just south of Moonta Bay, and essentially a suburb of Moonta, one of the three towns that makes up the Copper Coast along with Kadina and Wallaroo.

For the best rates, book your stay at the Port Hughes Big4 holiday park in advance.

Things to do in Port Hughes, South Australia: South Beach

Port Hughes hasn’t got a lot going on, but with South Beach in its armoury, it really doesn’t need to. This is a beach escape with white sand, often turquoise waters and calm seas that are ideal for swimming. Dunes back the beach rather than development, and the whole look conjures up images of a South Pacific island rather than the Spencer Gulf.

Port Hughes sunsets

South Beach in Port Hughes is also a tremendous spot to watch the sun set, as it faces west.

The Port Hughes Jetty at this Port Hughes beach is also a popular spot for fishing. Snook, garfish and squid are the most prized regular catches for those dangling their lines from the Port Hughes Jetty.

Things to do in Port Hughes, South Australia: The Dunes and Copperclub

The Port Hughes Tavern and General Store are the two options for food, unless you venture to the Dunes. This housing development is a retirement village by any other name, but it has the Copperclub golf course as its centrepiece. Designed by Australian golfing legend Greg Norman, the Copperclub course is one of the best places to swing a driver in South Australia. Green fees at Copperclub cost $49 for 18 holes.

The golf course is also home to the Grind Café, while the Dunes also hosts the Deck Café. Both are open to visitors as well as residents.

For cheap accommodation in the area, the Moonta Bay caravan park is a solid bet with good children’s facilities, but the Big4 holiday park is in Port Hughes itself.
