Bathurst to Dubbo drive: Lake Burrendong and Wellington

The Mitchell Highway continues to Dubbo, but the Orange to Dubbo drive is slightly quicker if you go along Burrendong Road.

The main town on the route is Wellington, but before you get there, you’ll go past Lake Burrendong. Created by the Burrendong Dam on the Macquarie River, it’s a good spot for fishing and water sports. There’s also good bushwalking and the Burrendong Botanic Garden and Arboretum.

Attractions in Wellington include the Golden Era Piano Museum and, for walkers, the Mount Arthur Reserve.

It’s not too far from Wellington to Dubbo. Here you can do a safari-style visit to the Taronga Western Plains Zoo – book skip-the-queue tickets here – and enjoy a ghost tour at the Old Dubbo Gaol.

Dubbo accommodation possibilites include the conveniently central Palms Dubbo Inn, kid-friendly Discovery Parks Dubbo and the good value Cattleman’s Country Inn and Serviced Apartments.
