Don’t expect many towns for a while afterwards – the Burnett Highway heads south through very rural stretches of Banana Shire. It passes between several state forests, with the Coominglah State Forest to the south being of the most interest.

Here, the 57km Hurdle Gully Drive takes you to the Hurdle Gully Lookout. There are picnic tables and an interpretive display here, with views over the Three Moon Creek Valley and Mulgildie Plateau.

Road trip essentials that many travellers forget

Search on the web, and you’ll find ludicrously long lists of equipment to take on a road trip. Australia Travel Questions isn’t going to do that to you. But it is worth buying the following road trip items before setting off. Click through for a good range of options.

Stick to the highway, however, and you’ll come to Monto. You can stop for food, a supermarket and fuel here.

Otherwise, continue south to Three Moon, where there is a giant mural painted across the grain silos. Further along, Mulgildie has one of the silliest Big Things – a Giant Bunyip. A bunyip is a mythical creature derived from Aboriginal stories.

The highway then heads south past Tellebang Mountain, alongside Splinter Creek, until it reaches the Burnett River.

The next stop of potential interest, however, is Eidsvold. This small country town has a caravan park, golf course and supermarket. It is also home to the RM Williams Bush Learning Centre. Here, you can learn about bush skills, the beef industry and bush poetry. You can also watch leathercraft demonstrations.
