Denham and Monkey Mia are the two most popular places to stay in the Shark Bay region of Western Australia. Denham is a pleasant coastal mini-town with more facilities. Shortly afterwards, the Monkey Mia Road goes past the entrance to the Francois Peron National Park. A 4WD vehicle is required to explore most of the national park, including Big Lagoon and Cape Peron, but with a conventional vehicle, you can get as far as the Peron Homestead Precinct. Here, the Peron Homestead and shearing sheds are now mini-museums, looking at the National Park’s past as an enormous sheep station.

If you decline the opportunity to investigate the Francois Peron National Park, you’ll continue along the Monkey Mia Road past the tiny Shark Bay Airport. From here, the Denham to Monkey Mia drive passes several small lakes, before entering the Monkey Mia Conservation Park.

There’s an unavoidable $15 fee to enter the Monkey Mia Conservation Park – money which supposedly goes towards looking after the famous Monkey Mia dolphins. Accommodation is available at the RACV Monkey Mia Dolphin Resort.
