Do I need a 4WD vehicle to get to Cape Tribulation, QLD?
The drive to Cape Tribulation, Queensland, is a great road trip. But you don’t need a 4WD to do it.
Cape Tribulation is an increasingly popular jungle hideaway destination in far north Queensland. It is off the electricity grid and surrounded by the Daintree Rainforest. But the beaches and range of activities make Cape Tribulation a popular day trip from Cairns and Port Douglas.
However, many visitors assume they need a 4WD vehicle to get to Cape Tribulation. This is partly because most places north of the Daintree River require a 4WD, and partly because you have to cross the river itself and there’s no bridge.

Why you should do a Daintree River cruise
- You ARE going to see crocodiles. Probably several of them.
- It’s not just crocs – it’s a glimpse of the whole Daintree ecosystem, with snakes and birds too.
- The tours take an hour or so – you can fit in plenty more on the same day.
As for crossing the river, that’s where the Daintree River cable ferry comes in. Line up by the river bank and it will take you across while the Daintree crocodile cruise boats explore downstream.
