Most driving from Mount Isa to Camooweal will be heading into the Northern Territory along the Barkly Highway. The Brisbane to Darwin, or Townsville to Darwin, road trip route passes along this way.

The route heads out of Mount Isa past Mount Isa Airport. Perhaps more of interest is the disused World War II airfield further along the highway, however. This has now been repurposed as a picnic ground and free camping area. It’s about 54km west of Mount Isa.
