Honeymoon Bay, Jervis Bay: Opening hours, swimming & camping

Part of the Beecroft Weapons Range on the Beecroft Peninsula, Honeymoon Bay in Jervis Bay has limited opening times. But it’s a great place to go swimming and camping.

Honeymoon Bay, Jervis Bay, is a spectacular white sand beach on the Beecroft Peninsula. It is undoubtedly one of the most beautiful beaches in New South Wales, and is in a near perfect semi-circular arc.

This Jervis Bay beach is a short distance from Point Perpendicular and about 10km from Currarong. It lies to the south of Long Beach.

Weapons testing at Honeymoon Bay

What makes Honeymoon Bay unusual, however, is that you can only visit it on weekends, public holidays and New South Wales school holidays.

Honeymoon Bay is on Department of Defence land – as is much of the Beecroft Peninsula. For the rest of the year, the surrounding area is closed off for weapons testing. Ironically, the small bay resembles a mushroom cloud when viewed from the air…

It’s also worth being aware that the Beecroft Weapons Range is sometimes closed at short notice even on dates is should otherwise be open.

Swimming at Honeymoon Bay, Jervis Bay

Swimming at Honeymoon Bay is generally pretty safe. Jervis Bay is known for its calm waters, and Honeymoon Bay is even further protected by the curving rock shoreline around it.

It is not patrolled by lifeguards, but most visitors should be absolutely fine donning a snorkel and seeing what marine life they can find in the bay.

Honeymoon Bay camping

There is a basic campground at Honeymoon Bay, aimed at those happy to go bush camping with very few facilities. There are portable toilets and recycling bins, but little else.

The Honeymoon Bay campground is only open on Friday and Saturday nights for the bulk of the year. Again, this is due to the weapons testing.

Honeymoon Bay camping sites cost $15 per night for up to two people, and another $5 per night for extra campers. Camping at Honeymoon Bay is free for those under the age of 16. Fees must be paid in cash to the Visits Centre.

Sites for the NSW school holiday period are in extremely high demand, and are allocated via a ballot system. Get your application in by the end of August to be considered.
