Callala Beach, NSW: Is it the best Jervis Bay beach?

Callala Beach, NSW: Is it the best Jervis Bay beach?

Callala Beach is the longest beach in Jervis Bay, and has glorious white sand. But it’s not the best Jervis Bay beach for facilities, tours and attractions.

The beaches of Jervis Bay, New South Wales, are justifiably highly regarded. Hyams Beach has long been regarded as having the whitest sand in Australia (although a recent study showed Lucky Bay in Western Australia is the winner on that front).

The Jervis Bay beaches line up around the largely protected bay, about two-and-a-half hours south of Sydney. Amongst them is Callala Beach.

How long is Callala Beach?

Is Callala Beach the best beach in Jervis Bay, though? Well, that sort of thing is rather subjective. Callala Beach is the longest beach in Jervis Bay, however.

Callala Beach measures 5.6km, sweeping in a broad curve between Callala Point and the mouth of Currambene Creek at Myola. It faces south-east, directly towards the mouth of Jervis Bay.

Callala Beach holiday rentals

Callala Beach plays host to several holiday rentals, which line up behind the northern half of the beach. The southern half of the beach is basically left wild and free, however, with the last kilometre or so forming a narrow spit between the bay and Currambene Creek.

Of the Jervis Bay beaches, Callala Beach is not where the action is. Dining pretty much consists of the Hungry Seagull fish and chip shop, or decamping to neighbouring Callala Bay and Huskisson. There is a reserve with barbecue facilities behind the beach, however.

Attractions near Callala Beach, NSW

Jervis Bay attractions and activities require a short drive from Callala Beach. The Jervis Bay National Park, for example, starts just north of Callala Bay. And the dolphin-watching tours that Jervis Bay is famous for depart from Huskisson.

Jervis Bay kayak hire is available from Huskisson-based outfitters too.

In terms of swimming, Callala Beach is reasonably safe. The combination of a shallow bar and the Beecroft Peninsula preventing surf getting too high and rough. But it is unpatrolled. If you want lifesavers patrolling between the red and yellow flags, aim for Hyams Beach instead. And, if you want secluded, plump for Murrays Beach, deep inside the bizarre Jervis Bay Territory. Blenheim Beach in Vincentia, meanwhile, is great for snorkelling.
