Both could be worked into a loop circuit, starting with the drive from Sydney to Dubbo via the Blue Mountains, Bathurst and Orange. Then, on the way back from Tamworth to Sydney, you can take in the Hunter Valley wine region, Newcastle and the Central Coast.

From Coolah, the Golden Highway passes through Bomera, Premer, Yannergee. Then come Spring Ridge, Caroona, Werris Creek and Currabubula.

As these less-than-familiar names would suggest, the Dubbo to Tamworth drive is not packed with Australian tourism highlights. It is, however, a good chance to drive through classic country scenery.
