Lithgow to Mudgee road trip: Distance, drive time & best stops

Ben Bullen Trail and Gardens of Stone National Park

This is not to be confused with the Ben Bullen Trail, a beloved 4WD track in the Gardens of Stone National Park. This sometimes challenging drive is known for its wildflowers and sandstone cliffs.

On the western side of the Castlereagh Highway, there’s the Turon National Park. Based around the Turon River, this national park is a popular camping spot, with good walking and fishing once out of the tent.

Lithgow to Mudgee road trip: Pearsons Lookout and Capertee Valley

If you just want a photo stop, however, pull over at Pearsons Lookout just before the town of Capertee.

Capertee is the gateway to Capertee Valley, the world’s second largest canyon. The scenic drive to Glen Davis shows off the best dramatic escarpment scenery.

The Capertee National Park is just to the north of the valley. It’s renowned for its birdwatching, but you can see plenty of native animals such as kangaroos and wallabies around the campgrounds. If you just want great views, the Valley Lookout looks over the Capertee Valley.
