Melbourne to Broken Hill road trip: Mildura to Broken Hill

The drive from Mildura to Broken Hill is 297km long, and it is the last leg of a Melbourne to Broken Hill road trip.

The quickest route between Mildura and Broken Hill by car follows the Calder Highway over the Murray River near the suburb of Yelta. Once on the New South Wales side of the river, the Calder Highway joins the Silver City Highway.

The highway continues to Wentworth, where the Darling River flows into the Murray.

Attractions in Wentworth include the Wentworth Pioneer Museum, Old Wentworth Gaol and Perry Sandhills.

After Wentworth, the Melbourne to Broken Hill road trip enters the New South Wales outback. The highway crosses the Great Darling Anabranch, and a series of almost always dry lakes.

At one point, the Silver City Highway passes through the bed of Coombah Lake. It’s important to fill up with fuel in Wentworth, as there are no longer any roadhouses between Wentworth and Broken Hill.

Things to do in Broken Hill include the Big Picture at the Silver City Mint, the Living Desert sculptures and Silverton’s Mad Max 2 Museum. Adjust your clocks, too – Broken Hill is on South Australian time.
