NZD to AUD: How many New Zealand dollars to the Australian dollar?

NZD to AUD: How many New Zealand dollars to the Australian dollar?

The NZD to AUD exchange rate has been fairly consistent for nearly a decade, with the New Zealand dollar worth slightly less than the Australian dollar.

The Australian dollar and New Zealand dollar are not the same thing. Both are separate currencies, and can’t be used in the other country as legal tender. The same applies with US dollars, which are also different, and not spendable in either Australia or New Zealand.

At time of writing in April 2021, the New Zealand dollar was worth 0.93 Australian dollars. This is reasonably consistent with how the NZD to AUD exchange rate has been for nearly decade. The best rule of thumb is that the New Zealand dollar is worth slightly less than the Australian dollar.

NZD to AUD: Historic exchange rates

This has not always been the case, however. It is only in recent years that the two currencies have been so close. Take a look back over the last 20 years, and it is more common for the New Zealand dollar to be worth 75% to 85% of the Australian dollar.

For visitors including both Australia and New Zealand in their trip Down Under, this means that the maths is fairly simple. The two currencies are worth more or less the same, and it’s probably not worth stretching the brain over a few cents. Similar applies to the Singapore dollar – the SGD to AUD exchange rate is just under 1.

However, because the New Zealand dollar is historically a bit weaker, the New Zealand leg of the journey might seem a little more expensive. Given that Australia is hardly cheap, and that shopping in Australia is expensive, this is saying something.
