Road trip to Monkey Mia from Perth: Go via Kalbarri?

The quickest route from Geraldton to Monkey Mia heads inland, but there’s a strong argument for sticking to the coast and going via Kalbarri.

The Geraldton to Kalbarri drive takes you near Horrocks Beach and Hutt Lagoon. This photogenic pink lake can be seen from the air on a scenic flight or buggy tour.

6 great Kalbarri experiences to book before you arrive

  • See the colours of the giant cliffs change on a sunset cliffs cruise.
  • Have fun catching the local lobsters on a lobster pot pulling tour.
  • Learn about the area’s history, nature and wildlife on a Murchison River cruise.
  • See migrating humpbacks on a seasonal whale-watching experience.
  • Take a scenic flight to Monkey Mia for a dolphin-feeding encounter.
  • Fly over the infamous Batavia shipwreck on an Abrolhos Islands tour by plane.

You’ll also see some of the Kalbarri National Park’s dramatic coastal rock formations. Take your pick from Eagle Gorge, Pot Alley, Mushroom Rock, Red Bluff and the Blue Holes.

Once in the town itself, appealling activities include lobster pot-pulling tours, whale-watching outings and sunset cruises.

Kalbarri accommodation possibilities include the Kalbarri Palms Resort close to the beach, the well-equipped Murchison View Apartments, horse-rider favourite the Big River Ranch and the luxurious Sols Place Boutique Pool Villas.
