Broken Hill car rental: Do I need a car in Broken Hill?

You don’t necessarily need a car in Broken Hill – several attractions are pretty central. But some of the bigger attractions are further afield, so renting a car in Broken Hill may come in handy.

Broken Hill is one of Australia’s most enjoyable outback towns. In western New South Wales near the South Australian border, Broken Hill is a mining town with a strong arty streak. It’s also a key stop along the Barrier Highway if driving from Adelaide to Brisbane.

Do I need a car in Broken Hill?

Whether driving from Adelaide to Broken Hill or Sydney to Broken Hill, most people will arrive here by car. But for those flying in, or taking the Sydney to Broken Hill train, there is a decision to be made on whether to rent a car.

Whether you need to rent a car in Broken Hill depends largely on what you’re planning to see and do. If you stay centrally, at the likes of the Red Earth Motel or Desert Sand Motor Inn, then several attractions are within walking distance.

The Albert Kersten Mining Museum, Line of Lode Memorial, Palace Hotel and Silver City Mint and Art Centre are all within an easy walk of the Broken Hill train station.

Exploring Broken Hill on tours

However, other attractions are a little further out. It’s a 3km walk to the Pro Hart Gallery, for example, while the Living Desert State Park and Mad Max Museum in Silverton definitely require wheels.

Now, you can visit much of Broken Hill and the surrounding area on tours. An outback sculpture tour visits the Living Desert State Park, for instance. But hiring a car makes it much easier to explore under your own steam.

Broken Hill car rental prices

Broken Hill car rentals are available from either Downtown or Broken Hill Airport. Rates tend to be slightly cheaper downtown. When searching a couple of months in advance using a car rental comparison site, it was around $538 for a week’s rental downtown and $576 from the airport. That’s around $77 a day for the cheapest Broken Hill car rentals.

There are more suppliers at Broken Hill Airport, however – take your pick from Avis, Hertz, Sixt and Thrifty.
