The last stretch on the Sydney to Byron Bay road trip is the short leg from Ballina to Byron Bay.
Just north of Tintenbar, you’ll find a marvellous waterfall in Killen Falls and a decent wildlife park at Macadamia Castle.
Alternatively, the coast offers several excellent surf beaches. Lennox Head, Whites Beach, Kings Beach, the Broken Head Reserve and Arakwal National Park are all tremendous, but easily visited as days out from Byron.
