Free stopovers in Perth?

But does Qantas offer free stopovers in Perth, or does it cost significantly more to spend a few nights in Perth before heading on to east coast Australia?

Well, that depends on how you look at it. Qantas doesn’t have an official stopover scheme, but building in a Perth stopover doesn’t necessarily cost any extra. Sometimes, in fact, stopping over in Perth can make the flight tickets a little bit cheaper.

How much does a stopover in Perth cost?

For a dummy booking, we looked at the price of a return flight from London Heathrow to Melbourne in low season – November. Qantas quoted £1,657 for an economy class return via Perth.

Then we used the multi-city booking tool to add three days in Perth on the way to Melbourne. The cheapest option here cost £1,614.

Booking a three day Perth stopover on the way to east coast Australia ended up slightly cheaper than the layover at Perth Airport without stopping over.

Obviously, this Perth stopover on the way to Australia doesn’t include the cost of a hotel room. But it’s still a pretty good deal if you want to see Perth and find the prospect of flying to east coast Australia without a stop daunting.

However, it should be pointed out that while travelling via Perth is the quickest way to Melbourne, it is not the cheapest way. Qantas also offers a London to Melbourne flight service with a change of planes in Singapore. The cheapest economy class return ticket via the Singapore route on the same dates cost £1,281.
