What are rainbow lorikeets? And where in Australia can I see them?

Rainbow lorikeets are native to bush areas of east coast Australia, although you can see these colourful parrots in Sydney back gardens.

Rainbow lorikeets are the sort of bird you see and say: “Ooh, what’s that?” And chances are that you’ll see plenty of rainbow lorikeets if you travel around Australia.

Where do rainbow lorikeets live?

The rainbow lorikeet is a species of parrot. It’s native to Australia, and quite common. It generally lives in woodland, rainforest and bush areas near the east coast of Australia. The bird has been introduced elsewhere in Australia, however.

It doesn’t take a genius to work out how the rainbow lorikeet got its name. This is one colourful bird, with bright reds, greens, blues and yellows. Their heads are blue, their necks are yellowy-orange, their wings are green, their underwings and beaks are red. They’re hardly camouflaged when you see them flitting around.

Rainbow lorikeets are also not birds that stick to remote country locations. They’re often found in Sydney back gardens. The brazenness and lack of shyness is a large part of the rainbow lorikeet’s appeal.

Rainbow lorikeets in zoos and wildlife parks

There are several zoos and wildlife parks in the UK where you can see rainbow lorikeets. The same applies in Australia. There’s a fairly strong chance of bumping into some in the bush while travelling around the country. But if you want to guarantee seeing a rainbow lorikeet, then Australian zoos and wildlife parks serve them up.

Zoos in Australia that have rainbow lorikeets include Australia Zoo on Queensland’s Sunshine Coast, the Oakvale Wildlife Park in Port Stephens and the Featherdale Wildlife Park in Sydney. At the Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary on the Gold Coast, you can hand feed them.
