Halls Gap Recreation Reserve: Where to see kangaroos in the Grampians, Victoria

The Halls Gap Recreation Reserve is a fantastic place to see kangaroos in the Grampians. But you might not have to leave your accommodation to spot kangaroos in Halls Gap.

The underrated Grampians region, to the west of Melbourne, is great for food and wine, bushwalking, rock climbing, MacKenzie Falls and scenic lookouts. But it’s also a haven for native Australian wildlife. You can go to Halls Gap Zoo if you want, but there are few better places than the Grampians for seeing a kangaroo in the wild.

Where to see kangaroos in the Grampians

The trick to spotting kangaroos in the Grampians is knowing what sort of terrain they like. While the Grampians is known for its mountains, roos don’t like steep hillsides. The best place to find them is on relatively flat, open ground with bushes or trees to the side. Kangaroos tend to bound around in the open, then doze by the bushes.

This means that certain areas are always good bets for seeing kangaroos. These include paddocks, golf courses, campsites and other grasslands. They do live in woodland too, but it’s going to be much harder to see them there.

Kangaroos at Halls Gap Recreation Reserve

This magic combination of open grass and bordering bush can be found in abundance in Halls Gap, the small town in the heart of the Grampians. Both eastern grey and western grey species can be found here. If you want to see kangaroos in the Grampians, then the Halls Gap Recreation Reserve should be the number one destination.

Theoretically home to an Australian Rules football oval and cricket pitch, the Halls Gap kangaroos tend to muscle in when balls aren’t whizzing around. There can often be dozens on the reserve, which is part of why the Grampians is one of the best places to see wildlife in Victoria.

But kangaroos hang out all over Halls Gap, and you might not need to leave your accommodation to see them. At the Halls Gap Lakeside Tourist Park, for example, they can often be found bouncing through the grounds. And, at the Grampians Eco-YHA, the roos like to chill on the grassy paddock to the rear.

The drive from Melbourne to Halls Gap takes just under three hours.
