When visiting Katherine Gorge in the Northern Territory’s Nitmiluk National Park, most visitors tend to drive in from the town of Katherine. However, it is possible to stay by the gorge itself courtesy of the Nitmiluk Chalets.

Run by the 100% Aboriginal-owned Nitmiluk Tours, the Nitmiluk Chalets are positioned below the escarpment, just 600 metres from where the gorge boat tours and canoeing trips depart from.

Nitmiluk Chalets facilities

These chalets – which are in the process of being rebranded as the Nitmiluk Cabins – are fully self-contained. They come with full kitchens and en-suite bathrooms, while you can choose between one bedroom and two bedroom chalets.

There is a resort-style pool on site, while the generously-sized balconies are a great place to watch the local wildlife. Lots of wallabies hang out nearby, so you’ve got a very good chance of seeing one.

Nitmiluk Chalets prices

The one bedroom cabins at Nitmiluk Chalets cost from $194 a night, while the two bedroom cabins cost from $242.

During the dry season, there’s a bistro and café serving meals. This closes during the evenings in the off-season, however, so you will have to self cater then.
