Mount Baw Baw husky tours: Can I do a sled dog ride in Victoria?

Howling Husky Sled Dog Tours run Mount Baw Baw husky tours in Victoria’s High Country. You can do a sled dog ride in Victoria during the ski season – June to August.

Many visitors have a mistaken assumption that Australia is always hot. It is not. In fact, it gets cold enough for Australia to have a reasonably substantial ski season.

Most of the ski resorts are concentrated in the Australian Alps, fairly close to Australia’s highest mountain, Kosciuszko. In the Snowy Mountains of New South Wales, popular ski resort options include Thredbo and Jindabyne. On the Victorian side of the border, options include Mt Buller, Mt Hotham and Falls Creek.

But the Australian snow isn’t always about the skiing, and in Victoria’s High Country, it’s possible to go on a sled dog ride. Howling Husky Sled Dog Tours runs trips through the snow at one of Victoria’s other alpine resorts, Mount Baw Baw.

Realistically, most visitors are going to be doing one of these Mount Baw Baw husky tours for the novelty factor. And for them, the 30 minute dog sled dash tour will do just fine.

This short dog sledding experience heads out along the Latrobe Trail with an experienced musher and team of eight huskies. En route, guests learn about the dogs, their jobs, and the equipment used. The adventure finishes with pats, cuddles and photos. There’s around 15 minutes in the sled.

These half hour dog-sledding tours cost $185 for two people riding together, or $150 for one adult. If it’s two children riding together on this quirky Victorian experience, it’s $150.

Other places worth visiting in Victoria’s High Country include heritage-heavy Beechworth, where you can go on a Ned Kelly walking tour. There’s more of the Kelly legend to be discovered at Stringybark Creek and Glenrowan. If coming from Melbourne, Toorongo Falls is on the way to Mt Baw Baw, near the Noojee Trestle Bridge Rail Trail in Noojee.
