Toorongo Falls in Gippsland, Victoria: Why should I visit?

The Toorongo Falls Circuit Walk in the Toorongo Falls Reserve near Noojee takes in two photogenic waterfalls. It’s a good journey-breaker on a West Gippsland road trip.

Just south of the Yarra Ranges National Park in West Gippsland, Toorongo Falls is one of many photogenic waterfalls in the Australian state of Victoria.

Toorong Falls is not the sort of place to travel all the way to Victoria for, but it makes an engaging stop as part of a Gippsland road trip.

This Victorian waterfall is part of the Toorongo Falls Reserve, a 16 hectare reserve carved out around the Toorong and Little Toorongo Rivers. The nearest town of any size is Noojee.

Toorongo Falls Circuit Walk and Amphitheatre Falls Loop

Toorongo Falls is easy to walk to, and the walk through the Toorongo Falls Reserve can also include a second waterfall. If you add on the Amphitheatre Falls Loop, the Toorongo Falls Circuit Walk is 2.2km long as opposed to 1.5km. It’s not much further, and the whole thing should take little over an hour.

The Toorongo Falls Circuit Walk from the Toorongo Falls Reserve car park passes through dense native bushland. There are tall mountain eucalypts and plenty of lush, green ferns. Possums, sugar gliders and bats hang out in the reserve, if wildlife spotting is your thing.

The track to Toorongo Falls follows the Toorongo River. It is mostly uphill and with a few rock steps, but it’s fine for anyone with an average level of fitness. Once there, you’re rewarded with a highly picturesque tiered waterfall that bounces down the rocks with a forest backdrop. It’s best viewed from the observation platform.

Amphitheatre Falls Lookout

Amphitheatre Falls, not quite as high, but offering good views over the often fast-flowing Toorongo River, also has its own lookout.

There are picnic tables and toilet facilities available at the Day Visitor Area next to the car park. This makes Toorongo Falls Reserve a decent shout for a lunch stop on a West Gippsland road trip. Another alternative nearby is the Noojee Trestle Bridge Rail Trail in Noojee.

You can then move on towards husky-sledding rides at Mt Baw Baw and heritage train rides at the Walhalla Goldfields Railway.
