Corinna, Tasmania, is a former gold-mining town that now devotes itself to tourism. It’s in the north-west of Australia’s smallest state, a 124km (or two hour) drive south-west of Burnie.

Things to do in Corinna, Tasmania: Huon Pine Walk

Corinna is at the southern end of the Tarkine wilderness area, home to Australia’s largest patch of temperate rainforest. If you want to stay onland, then there are several walking trails through the Tarkine Reserve. The most accessible walk in Corinna is the Huon Pine Walk, which is around 600 metres long and easy-going. It’ll take about 20 minutes, and takes you through the rainforest to the banks of the Pieman River.

There are, of course, some tougher walks to take on. Those who fancy a proper workout can take on the Savage River or Mount Donaldson walks.

Things to do in Corinna, Tasmania: River cruises

But the best things to do in Corinna are on the river. Pieman river cruises take place aboard the Arcadia II, a handsome old goat of a boat made in 1939 from Huon Pine. It’s on the Australian register of historic vessels, and the Arcadia II has been operating cruises on the Pieman River since 1910. The cruises last around four-and-a-half hours, costing $95.

It’s also possible to explore the Pieman River in a kayak. Corinna Wilderness Experience hires out single and double kayaks, encouraging customers to poke their noses down the Savage and Donaldson rivers too.

The three hour three hour Lovers Falls/Savage River Paddle takes in the SS Croydon and Lovers Falls. You’ve got enough to cover that with the $35 half day hire, but you can stump up $60 and take the kayak out for the full day should you wish.
