Tullah, Tasmania, is a fairly isolated town on the west coast of the island. It is roughly halfway between Burnie and Strahan, on the Murchison Highway, and mining has long given way to tourism.

Things to do in Tullah, Tasmania: Trout-fishing on Lake Mackenzie

The biggest of the lakes near Tullah is Lake Mackintosh, which is well-stocked with brown trout and rainbow trout. There are several boat ramps around the lake, making it a popular fishing destination.

Between the town of Tullah, Tasmania, and Lake Mackintosh is Mount Farrell. This 712m-high hill represents the target for Tullah’s best walking trail, and there are fantastic wilderness views from the top. The 8.7km return walking trail to the Mount Farrell summit also takes in Lake Herbert, with the sometimes challenging walk taking three to four hours.

The Tullah Lakeside Lodge is the main accommodation option in Tullah, Tasmania. Its restaurant, with marvellous views over Lake Rosebery, is the best place to eat in town, too.

The 20 minute Lake Rosebery walking track starts just west of the lodge, and there’s a decent chance of spotting platypus on the way.

Things to do in Tullah, Tasmania: Wee Georgie Wood Steam Railway

Aside from the lakes, the main attraction in Tullah, Tasmania, is the Wee Georgie Wood Steam Railway. Up until the 1960s, this was the only way into Tullah.

Now, steam train tours run along the Wee Georgie Wood Steam Railway on selected summer weekends.
