Wyndham, Western Australia: Where are the best places for fishing?

Wyndham, Western Australia, is one of the greatest places for fishing in the country. Top fishing spots around the hard-to-reach Kimberley town include Anthon’s Landing, the King River and Cambridge Gulf.

Wyndham is the northernmost town in Western Australia, and it takes a fair amount of effort to get there. For a start, you need to take a diversion off the Victoria Highway near Kununurra, and you’re going to need a 4WD vehicle once you’re there.

People who love fishing, however, are likely to find getting to Wyndham is worth the bother. This tiny Kimberley town is the gateway to some of the best fishing in Australia.

This is partly because it offers a mix of mangroves, creeks, mud flats and tidal estuaries. Nearby, several rivers – including the Ord River and King River – run into the sprawling Cambridge Gulf. There’s a lot of water, of varying depths and salinity. And that means a lot of very different fishing opportunities.

Salt water barramundi are the main draw, and unusually, they can be caught year round. Anthon’s Landing, a recreational fishing jetty, was built in Wyndham in 2012. It’s on the site of the original jetty, from where cattle were shipped to Fremantle.

There are more excellent fishing spots along the King River Road. You’ll need a four wheel drive vehicle, but the rewards are tremendous fishing spots on the banks of the King River. You’ll almost certainly have it all to yourself.

Around the Cambridge Gulf, the most desirable – and plentiful – species to catch include northern mulloway, mangrove jack and threadfin salmon. But it’s barramundi that most come for, and they’re best caught in the warmer months between September and May. Be wary of the Cambridge Gulf tides, however – they can move up to 8.3 metres.

Wyndham fishing permits

If fishing from a boat, you will need to organise a licence in advance. These fishing licences, costing $40, can be purchased through the Department of Transport website.

Other things to do in the eastern end of the Kimberley include cruises on Lake Argyle.
