Greenmount Beach, Coolangatta & Queensland’s oldest surf club

Greenmount Beach in Coolangatta is home to Queensland’s oldest surf life saving club. It is better for swimming than surfing, and the Greenmount Beach House is a good bet for family accommodation on the Gold Coast.

Where is Greenmount Beach?

Greenmount Beach is a beach in Coolangatta on Queensland’s Gold Coast. It is, to all intents and purposes, an extension of Coolangatta Beach. Most visitors will not distinguish between the two. However, officially, Greenmount Beach is the eastern end next to the Rainbow Bay Lookout on the Greenmount Hill.

Oldest surf club in Queensland

Greenmount Beach is most notable for being home to the Tweed Heads and Coolangatta Surf Life Saving Club. This is the oldest surf life saving club in Queensland, having been founded in 1911. You’ll find the clubhouse at the eastern end of the beach.

Is it safe to swim at Greenmount Beach?

It is relatively safe to swim at Greenmount Beach, and it is patrolled by surf lifesavers. It is also north facing, so has decent protection from the ocean swells.

However, there can be rips along the beach, and when the waves get higher, these rips get more pronounced. Therefore, it’s best to stick to the patrolled area between the red and yellow flags.

Best day trips from the Gold Coast – 7 ways to improve your stay

The Gold Coast is a destination in its own right, but there are several excellent day trips you can do while using it as a base.

Surfing at Greenmount Beach

The beach breaks at Greenmount Beach are generally too small for surfers to bother with. The break off Greenmount Hill is better, however.

Greenmount Beach accommodation

If you want to stay at Greenmount Beach, then the Greenmount Beach House is at the bottom end of Greenmount Hill. This art deco hotel has an outdoor pool with a water slide, plus family rooms. It’s a popular choice for parents travelling with young children.
