Where is the Rocks Discovery Museum?

The Rocks Discovery Museum is inside an 1850s sandstone warehouse on Kendall Lane, the Rocks. This is just off Argyle Street. It provides an interesting alternative to a Rocks walking tour, Aboriginal Dreaming walk or historic pub crawl.

What does the Rocks Discovery Museum cover?

The Rocks Discovery Museum tracks the history of the area. But not from the time of European settlement, as most such attractions in Australia do. It starts 230 million years ago when the rocks that give the area its name were formed.

This Rocks museum then explores the area as seen through the eyes of the indigenous Cadigal people. Tools and canoes are amongst the traces that remain, but competition for natural resources and smallpox pretty much eradicated the Cadigal way of life.

The Rocks Discovery Museum then follows the story, through artefacts in cabinets, display signs and interactive screens, from the first traces of a recognisable street layout in 1810 to the tourist hub of today. Stories of quarrying, slum living, plague outbreaks and murder make it thoroughly engaging.
