Tuncurry Beach location

But where is Tuncurry Beach? Well, Nine Mile Beach is in the town of Tuncurry, better known as the smaller sister town of Forster on the Mid North Coast of New South Wales. It is just over halfway on the drive from Newcastle to Port Macquarie.

The town lies at the southern end of the beach, and this is where you’ll find the accommodation and cafés. The very southern end of Tuncurry Beach is known as the Tuncurry Rockpool, and it’s an enclosed swimming area protected by a breakwall.

The Tuncurry Rockpool is the best place to swim at Tuncurry, as surf lifesavers don’t patrol the rest of Nine Mile Beach.

The southern end of Tuncurry Beach also offers a snack kiosk, barbecue facilities and a children’s playground.

Tuncurry Beach shark attack

In May 2021, alas, Tuncurry Beach attracted notoriety when a surfer was killed in a shark attack. It was the first such attack in living memory here, and several sharks were spotted in the water days afterwards.

So is it safe to surf at Tuncurry Beach now? Well, it’s never entirely safe at any ocean beach. However, sharks generally have no interest in surfers, and most shark attacks in Australia are a case of mistaken identity.

Other great beaches around Forster include Burgess Beach, One Mile Beach and Forster Beach.
