What is a Sydneysider?
A Sydneysider is someone who lives in Sydney, Australia. Or someone who was born and raised there. Famous people from Sydney include Hugh Jackman, Ian Thorpe and Nicole Kidman.
Visit Sydney, and chances are you’ll hear the term “Sydneysider”. You might mistakenly think that this is a type of building, or maybe a cocktail. But it’s a lot more simple than that.
Definition of Sydneysider
Someone who lives in Sydney is called a Sydneysider.
There’s an argument to say that this only refers to someone born and raised in Sydney, but the distinction doesn’t tend to matter to anyone from outside the city. Ask someone from Melbourne (a Melburnian), and they’ll say anyone who lives in Sydney is a Sydneysider. They’ll probably apply that to anyone who lives in the Greater Sydney Area, too, despite someone from the outer fringes such as the Blue Mountains, Hawkesbury or Sutherland Shire not seeing it that way.

What are people from New South Wales called?
The label is, however, specific to Sydney. Someone from elsewhere in New South Wales is called a New South Welshman. That’s a horrendously clunky name, so it’s not a great surprise to learn that people tend to narrow it down to a specific city or region. Someone from Newcastle, for example, is called a Novocastrian.
