Lark Distillery tours: What’s the best way to see this Coal River Valley whisky distillery?

Lark Distillery tours in the Coal River Valley are currently suspended due to Covid. Should they resume, half day tours include the distillation process and tasting whisky straight from the cask.

In recent years, the world has been forced to stand up and take notice of Tasmanian whisky. Tasmanian whisky makers have been winning awards in competitions across the globe, and at the forefront is the Lark Distillery.

The Lark Distillery has a cellar door and whisky bar on the Hobart waterfront, but the distillery itself is in the Coal River Valley. That’s around 15 minutes’ drive north-east of the city.

Before Covid struck, it was possible to do a Lark Distillery tour. However, these tours are currently suspended until it is safe to operate them within Covid rules and regulations. The Lark Distillery has not put a timeframe on the tours reopening.

When they do, however, here’s what to expect from a half-day Lark Distillery tour in Tasmania

For a start, don’t bother driving to the Coal River Valley. The Lark Distillery tours start at the cellar door on Hobart waterfront. A whisky is served there, before a bus transfer to the distillery.

Once in the Coal River Valley, the Lark Distillery tour guide takes guests through the distillation process. The crucial part of this is the peat-smoking process. The Lark Distillery has its own bog in the Tasmanian Highlands, and mines peat from it.

The Lark Distillery tour then moves on to tasting whisky straight from the cask inside the bond store. Then it’s back on the bus to the Hobart waterfront for one more tasting.

The tours, when operational, cost $99. See the Lark Distillery website for more information.

While in Hobart, you might as well check out the hotel Roald Amundsen stayed in, go on a Hobart Harbour kayaking tour and take a Derwent River cruise to the Iron Pot lighthouse. Animal lovers can also venture to the Boronong Wildlife Sanctuary and surfers can practice at Clifton Beach.
