Dangar Island ferry: Costs and timetable from Brooklyn, NSW

The Dangar Island ferry connects the only residential island in the Hawkesbury River to Brooklyn, NSW. Fares cost $9.30 one way, the timetable has ferries departing from Brooklyn at 06.40.

The Dangar Island ferry is one of Sydney’s quirky small ferry services that don’t get the same attention as the Manly ferry or Parramatta ferry. It connects Dangar Island, a small island in the Hawkesbury River, to the Sydney suburb of Brooklyn.

The Dangar Island ferry is not an official part of the Sydney Ferries network, although the private operator does work under contract to Transport for New South Wales. The service leaves from Brooklyn in the north of Sydney, near the Hawkesbury River Bridge over to Mooney Mooney.

Is Dangar Island inhabited?

Dangar Island is the only permanently-inhabited island on the Hawkesbury River. Around 300 people live there, and the Dangar Island ferry is primarily used by residents. Private cars are banned on the island, although there is a buggy service run by residents. It is one of the spots served by the quirky Riverboat Postman.

The island is not exactly geared to visitors, but if you do head over there, you can do the 3km walk around the island or swim at Bradleys Beach.
