Size of Kangaroo Island

Kangaroo Island is surprisingly big. It’s the third largest island in Australia. It’s about 145km long, and driving times are longer than most visitors expect. It takes the best part of two hours to get from Penneshaw on the Dudley Peninsula to Admirals Arch in Flinders Chase National Park.

This is important because Penneshaw, in the east, is where the ferries arrive. And most of the key attractions on Kangaroo Island are on the west. If you want to visit Seal Bay, Admirals Arch, the Remarkable Rocks or Stokes Bay Beach, expect to put some time in behind the wheel.

The Kangaroo Island Airport is to the south-west of the island’s other main settlement, Kingscote. It’s still a one hour, 16 minute drive to Admirals Arch from here, but that is significantly closer.

The only airline offering scheduled flights to Kingscote Airport is Qantas. It runs year-round flights from Adelaide and seasonal flights from Melbourne.
