Nature’s Window, Kalbarri: Why visit this Kalbarri National Park lookout?

In Kalbarri National Park, Nature’s Window offers arguably the most spectacular lookout over the Murchison River Gorge.

Nature’s Window is one of the top attractions in Kalbarri National Park, Western Australia. If you’ve seen photos of this WA national park, then chances are, they were taken at Nature’s Window.

What is Nature’s Window, Kalbarri?

Nature’s Window, Kalbarri, is essentially an opening in the sandstone, looking out over the Murchison River Gorge. This photogenic viewpoint is a gap in the rock that looks a bit like a window, but it has a fabulous framing effect.

The layering in the sandstone adds an extra factor. It’s like several narrow Jenga bricks have been arranged precariously to form a jellybean-shaped hole.

The Loop, Kalbarri National Park

Nature’s Window is part of the Loop section of Kalbarri National Park, and it’s fairly easy to get to. The car park is a 37km drive north-west of the town of Kalbarri, and from the car park, Nature’s Window is a 1km return walk.

There are easier 1km return walks in the world, but tackling the stairs to the lookout is worth the effort. All in all, the Nature’s Window walk should take you 30 to 45 minutes, largely depending on how long you spend admiring the Murchison River Gorge views.

Nature’s Window and the Kalbarri National Park Loop Trail

Should you wish to enjoy more of the Loop area scenery, there is a longer walk. The 9km Loop Trail is occasionally tough going, but it’s mainly the temperatures you have to watch out for. The views of the red and white banded rocks and river are amazing, but there is no drinking water on the way.

There is also little shade, exacerbating those summer temperatures. Aim for a cooler day, or between May and October, if planning to undertake this Kalbarri National Park walk.

Other major Kalbarri National Park attractions include the Kalbarri Skywalk, which is opposite Nature’s Window on the other side of the gorge. And, on the coast, there are spectacular views of the cliffs from Red Bluff.
