AED to AUD: What’s the Emirati dirham to Australian dollar exchange rate?

The AED to AUD exchange rate has dropped significantly since March 2020, but the current exchange rate of 0.35 Australian dollars to the Emirati dirham is about average over the last five years.

While there are now direct flights from London to Perth, the vast majority of flights from Europe to Australia involve changing planes. Two of the major airlines connecting Europe to Australia are Emirates and Etihad, based in Dubai and Abu Dhabi respectively.

For passengers passing through the United Arab Emirates, there’s a good case to be made for having a stopover in Dubai or Abu Dhabi on the way to Australia. If you do stop over, you’re going to need some of the local currency – Emirati dirhams (AED).

The AED to AUD exchange rate at time of writing (May 2021) is 0.35, according to XE.com. So for every one Emirati dirham, you get 35 Australian cents. For 100 AED, it’s 35 AUD. And so on.

This is roughly what the AED to AUD exchange rate has been for several years now, barring an enormous spike in March 2020. Then it went up to 0.47, the highest the AED to AUD exchange rate has been for ten years. The exchange rate has been on a downward trajectory since then. It might stabilise, and it might go even lower. If it does get lower, that means Australia is starting to get very expensive indeed.

The lowest the AED to AUD exchange rate has been in the last ten years was in August 2011, when one Emirati dirham would get you just 25 Australian cents.
