Australian states by area: How big are Australia’s states?

For such a large country, Australia is broken up into surprisingly few states and territories. The size of Australian states, therefore, is massive. Western Australia is biggest, the Jervis Bay Territory smallest, but here are the Australian states by area.

Australia is a massive country, covering a continent. It is broken up into six states and three mainland territories under one flag. Given so few federal divisions, it will come as no surprise to learn that some of these states are absolutely humungous.

Driving times in the likes of Queensland, Western Australia and South Australia can be absolutely enormous. Australia’s biggest cities, such as Melbourne, Sydney, Brisbane, Perth and Adelaide, are so far apart that most people fly between them.
