It’s a short detour to the Bilburnie Homestead in Callide, which is part cattle farm, part art gallery, part heritage museum and part hang-out for local musicians.

The Dawson Highway then passes through the Callide Timber Reserve, and follows the Calliope River before arriving in Calliope.

Calliope is effectively a suburb of Gladstone, but the Calliope River Historical Village is worth a look. This open air museum brings together historic buildings from around the Gladstone region, preserving them as a collection.

Calliope is on the Bruce Highway, but keep going into Gladstone along the Dawson.

Gladstone is where you catch the Heron Island ferry to Heron Island or Wilson Island on the Great Barrier Reef. You can also take the Curtis Island to the less sexy, but still peacefully enjoyable, Curtis Island.

Good Gladstone accommodation options include the pleasingly affordable Aaron Motel, the highly-rated Harbour Sails Motor Inn and the spacious Oaks Gladstone Grand Hotel.
