Melbourne to Canberra road trip: Albury to Yass section

Near Albury on the New South Wales side of the border, Woomargama National Park makes for a wildlife and walking trail-filled diversion.

Otherwise, continue to Jugiong on the Murrumbidgee River. This town is a perfect lunch stop, with the Long Track Pantry being a notoriously good place to eat.

Jugiong accommodation picks include the dependable Jugiong Motor Inn and the charming Geralda Cottages.

Shortly afterwards comes Gundagai, where the Australian Road Transport Heritage Centre is the top attraction. For impressive accommodation with plenty of character, take a look at the nearby Nimbo Fork Lodge or Kimo Estate.

Just outside Yass, you’ll leave the Hume Highway and join the Barton Highway. But you may wish to stay and investigate some of the local wineries. Canberra Winery Tours offers pick-ups in Yass if you’d prefer to do more thorough tastings.

For Yass accommodation, take a look at the helpfully downtown Yass Central Bed and Breakfast and the well-rated Colonial Lodge Motor Inn.
