Kimo Estate in Nangus, NSW: Eco huts, cottages or shearers’ quarters?

There are three types of accommodation at the Kimo Estate near Gundagai. The eco huts are showiest, the cottages best value and the shearers’ quarters great for groups.

Kimo Estate in Nangus, New South Wales, offers luxury accommodation near Gundagai in the Riverina region. It’s a very popular wedding venue, but makes for an excellent overnight stop just off the Hume Highway if driving from Sydney to Albury or Melbourne to Canberra.

Several things make Kimo Estate distinctive. Firstly, it’s a working 7,000 acre sheep and cattle farm. Secondly, there’s a range of unusual accommodation to choose from.

The Homestead and gardens are for weddings, while the 110-year-old grain shed is a reception venue.

Kimo Estate accommodation

Accommodation at Kimo Estate comes in the form of three eco huts, two cottages and the shearers’ quarters. The eco huts are completely off-the-grid, powered by wind and sun, and sit high on hills overlooking the Murrumbidgee River. They’re billed as a glamping experience, but they’re essentially cabins with architecturally-distinctive triangular roofs. They come with log heaters, wood-fired hot tubs, barbecues and camp stoves.

Kimo Estate cottages and shearers’ quarters

Much better value are the self-contained cottages on the estate. One’s a former workers’ cottage, the other a former accountant’s cottage. They have three bedrooms and two bedrooms respectively, with rates starting at $210 per night. These cottages come with verandas, full kitchens, barbecues on the patio and an open fire place.

Alternatively, if travelling in a larger group, you can hire out the former shearers’ quarters. These have been given a considerable makeover, with each of the six bedrooms having individual temperature controls. The mess hall is now a dining room with an open fireplace, and the chef’s kitchen is perfect for larger group cooking. Rates for the Kimo Estate shearers’ quarters start at $450 a night.
