The distance from Moree to Walgett by car is 214km, with a driving time of around two hours and 20 minutes. The quickest route between the two inland NSW towns is along the Gwydir Highway, also known as the B76.

The Moree to Walgett drive starts out by following the same route as the Moree to Lightning Ridge drive. However, instead of turning north at the junction with the Castlereagh Highway, you go south.

It’s advisable to fill up with petrol before leaving Moree. The only fuel stop between Moree and Walgett is Collarenebri.

Unfortunately for anyone planning on an attraction-packed road trip, there really isn’t much to see on the Moree to Walgett drive. The top stop is arguably the Collymongle Carved Trees near Collarenebri. These trees were hand-carved by local Indigenous people, and there are only a few of them left. Others have been sent all over the world and ended up in museums.

Otherwise, just plough on until you reach Walgett, which has more than a town of its size usually offers. Things to do in Walgett include swimming in the naturally-heated Artesian Baths and learning about local Aboriginal culture at the Dharriwaa Elders Group Cultural Exhibition Centre.
