Newcastle, unsurprisingly, is on the Central Coast and Newcastle Line. There are trains running more-or-less throughout the day, with services departing Newcastle Interchange at 02.30 and 04.23 before becoming more frequent as everyone else wakes up.

For most of the day, there are two Newcastle to Sydney trains per hour. One leaves at 24 minutes past the hour and the other at 35 minutes past the hour.

Newcastle to Central Station train: Journey time and stops
Some of these Newcastle train services are faster than others. The quicker trains, which don’t stop at every station on the route, take two hours and 35 minutes. The slower services with more stops take two hours and 54 minutes.
The major stops on the Central Coast and Newcastle line are Hamilton, Fassifern, Morisset, Wyong, Gosford, Berowra, Hornsby, Epping and Strathfield. The services terminate at Sydney Central Station.
Of course, some of the stops on the slower service may be of interest to visitors. These include Ourimbah, home to the Treetops adventure course, and Hawkesbury River Station. This is in Brooklyn, the departure point for the Riverboat Postman cruise and Dangar Island ferry.
