Outer Harbor train, Adelaide: Timetable, journey time and fares

The Outer Harbor train connects Adelaide station with the cruise ship terminal at Outer Harbor. Trains are timetabled to run roughly every half hour, with a journey time of 40 minutes.

The Outer Harbor train runs along a suburban railway line, connecting central Adelaide with Outer Harbor on Gulf St Vincent.

Operated by Adelaide Metro, the Outer Harbor railway line is 21.9km long. It is largely a commuter service, but it is also used by visitors heading to Port Adelaide and Largs Bay. Most notably, it is the easiest public transport connection for cruise ship passengers wanting to go into the city centre. Outer Harbor is where cruise ships usually dock in Adelaide.

Outer Harbor train route

From Adelaide, the Outer Harbor train stops at Bowen, Croydon, West Croydon and Kilkenny. Then, before reaching Port Adelaide, it goes through Woodville Park, Woodville, St Clair, Cheltenham and Alberton.

Port Adelaide is roughly halfway along the Outer Harbor train line. After Port Adelaide, the line passes through Peterhead, Glanville, Peterhead, Largs and Largs North.

Before finally arriving in Outer Harbor, the train stops at Draper, Taperoo, Midlunga, Osborne and North Haven.

Outer Harbor train timetable

Full Outer Harbor train timetables are available on the Adelaide Metro website. But for a rough rule of thumb, expect trains to depart Adelaide for Outer Harbor approximately every half hour. The first Outer Harbor train departs Adelaide station at 4.34am.

Journey times are a little inconsistent, but most services take 40 minutes.

The Outer Harbor line is relatively cheap. Using a rechargeable regular Metro card, the Adelaide to Outer Harbour train fare is $3.95 in peak periods and $2.20 off peak.

With a single trip ticket, the journey will cost you $5.80 at peak times and $3.90 off peak.

Alternatively, you can head south instead, taking the Seaford train to go surfing at Seaford Beach.
